As the saying goes, “We cannot give what we don’t have” today we shall translate it to education. Teachers are meant to give guidance to the learners, show direction for them to take while facilitating the whole learning process and we should agree we can only direct someone to where we know well.
These and many others are some of the gaps in the education system that need to be addressed, the teacher’s profession calls for alot of capacity building workshops to expose them to new ideas, the various perspectives of viewing things and strengthen their firmness on the ground as they help lead the learners and young girls to their next stages of life.
Teachers are like ‘Breakdown trucks or tow trucks’ ready to help awaken the learners conciousness. With several distinct activities that led us to mutual dialogues, indepth discussions on the Teacher Centered learning approach and Learner Centered approach were enriching for every one in the workshops.
Knowing who the learners are and their needs is such a key element in education beacuse it’s better to ‘first teach the learner then teach the subject’- Wendo Jean Mary. This helps the teacher provide the student with the right guidance and help when they are in need beacuse there are several causes for their behaviours both internal and external like the adolescent stage, the school/community environment, family background etc.. and by the end of the trainings, the teachers understood their roles better, they were able to deliver classroom lessons that address learning objectives beyond formal end of cycle examinations, they could challenge the learners to think critically when finding solutions and intergrate classroom activities which for a wholesome learning environment among many others.
