The joy of being able to express yourself effectively is unmatched. Most times the girls and youth face minor challenges but lack the confidence to express themselves. After our trainings on Social and Emotional Learning skills, the learners had gained confidence in themselves through answering the questions on self identity.
When the girls and youth are self aware, they are able to manage their thoughts, feelings and behaviour in line with their personal and career goals.
The learners came to realise how special and unique each one of them is and this positively changed their mindset as they set their personal and career/academic goals with a more focused vision in form of an activity. Similarly the group activities opened them up to new approaches while sharing ideas in the different teams.
Among the challenges these learners raised, most girls suffer from ignorance and pressure in regards to their Sexual Reproductive Health which often results to absenteeism, missing classes, dropping out of school and early marriages.
We realised the girls needed a friend to open up to about their sexual reproductive issues, the challenges that come with the transition process from childhood to adulthood is another major concern that learners undergo but have no one almost to open up to.
To address the matter, J.M Education and Research Centre is implementing its Schoolwide ecosystem of support to uplift learner’s life outcomes with the first intervention as a training on Social and Emotional Learning to see that we awaken the consciousness of the girls and youth to realise their full potentials and fly. It’s the reason for JMERC’s existence among the learners; to help them navigate life challenges, equip them with soft skills/lifeskills that will enable them thrive.
We thank Schools and District officials of Tororo, Rukiga and Kabale for the warm hospitality and embracing our school ecosystem of support.
