We had a community dialogue with the parents to the students in our school programme in the East and Western region. In the mutual dialogues, we highlighted the importance of a parent/caregiver to the learner and how influencial their impact is on the learner’s education cycle. Education begins from home with the parents as the first teacher, moulding their child morally, socially and prepare them to embrace wholistic growth.
The parents/caregiver in this sense generalises all adults in position to give direction the learner regardless of their social, economic or political affiliations. At JMERC we believes that it takes a village to raise a child which justifies our community outreaches that are not limited but rather a loud call for a general public sensitisation of the impact the surroundings have on the quality of learners and education in that community.
Our aim is to reduce teacher dependency in the learning cycle of education but rather advocate for sharing of roles amongst the different stakeholders who directly impact in the learner’s future. The school ecosystem was warmly received in the 3 districts we are currently operating and by the end of term 3 2023, we have so far reach out to over 50 parents, the rest of the parental engagements have been scheduled for 1st term, 2024.
There is good results so far from the parents we have interacted with and highly recommend the upskilling trainings for scale up to benefit every parent in the country however we this calls fro more support to fund the activities. A donation of any amount today can help JMERC scale up this programme to capacitate the parents to pursue thier role more effectively.
What motivated us to engage the parents?
We realised most of the parents do not fully understand the percentage of their role in their children’s education but instead highly depend on the teacher and school heads for the academic excellency of their children however eduaction is a shared responsbility between the learner, the school and the community. We looked at engaging the parents and local communities at large as a strong pillar to highly impact the learners’ life outcomes when they passionately execute their roles.
