Uganda has the second youngest population in the world. The young population in Uganda is a “demographic dividend” that is integral to the future prosperity of the country. However, there are two huge challenges in providing relevant and quality education and giving all young people full and productive employment and decent work in Uganda. First, there is still a huge mismatch between the skills which employers require from potential employees and the actual skills school graduates possess. Secondly, the rate at which young people graduate from schools and universities is excessively higher than the rate at which job opportunities are being created, keeping the youth unemployment rate between 64-70%. This is not only a waste of resources spent while completing formal education but it also denies individuals the opportunity to afford a comfortable and dignified living.
JMERC responds to this challenge by proving entrepreneurship and work readiness skills training to enable youth to develop the skills and competencies to start and maintain small businesses and create job opportunities for fellow young people. Our goal is to enable students not only to develop an entrepreneurial mind-set but also to start their business start-ups. We provide mentorship to them so that they can nurture and sustain their start-ups.
